McLaren test driver Gary Paffett believes MP4-27 giving good results for 2012 season – Formula 1
McLaren’s test driver Gary Paffett says that the development of their new car is going according to plan.
In the previous season, McLaren’s MP-26 had its share of problems initially as the car had trouble with the exhaust design and made the car unreliable. McLaren had decided to give more time to development last year to come up with a car that could compete
with Red Bull’s RB7. In the aftermath of their unsuccessful design McLaren had to come up with a similar design as Red Bull and did a particularly well job at it but it was too late for the team to make a run for the title.
During the final stages of the previous season, McLaren however improved and gave some challenge to the leader of the grid, Red Bull. Jenson Button in particular was very impressive as he managed to finish second in the drivers’ championship.
This season with the off-throttle blown diffuser banned, Red Bull might not have the same advantage they had in the previous two seasons. McLaren would want to start the season strong to bid for a title win.
Paffett also said that MP4-27 is doing very good and the team is very optimistic for positive results in the season.
“It's always very difficult to say because we set ourselves targets to meet; but you can hit those targets and then get to the first test and be nowhere,” Paffett said.
“So we are pretty happy with how things are going, the progress has been good and we have obviously had the car in the simulator in various stages for many months now; we've got a pretty good representation of what it is going to be like and it feels good,”
he said.
It would be interesting to see how improved the new edition of the McLaren car would be, as it would be important for the season to hold more competitiveness than the previous two seasons where Red Bull dominated for the most part. The first glance of where
the new cars of the teams stand will be displayed during the pre-season testing in February.
