McLaren thinks development of car will be the deciding factor in remainder of season – Formula 1 news
Jonathan Neale, managing director of McLaren believes that close competition between Red Bull Racing, McLaren and Ferrari has lead to decisive development race.
Managing director of McLaren expects that the grand prix at Hungary will be very competitive in terms of development because the race leaders had a close competition of a few seconds during the German Grand Prix.
Furthermore, he said that despite the fact that Fernando Alonso has driven exceptionally well, he will not have an edge over Red Bull because their development rate is good and they enter the circuit with good winning cars.
Neale is of the view that they will have to work hard to get in to the competition of the first three places in the constructors’ standings.
Neale said, “Whilst it's undeniable that Fernando's driven really well this season, if you look at the points conversion rate of the Red Bull they're very strong and we have to get in amongst that mix but I don't think that Fernando has a clear advantage
over Red Bull at this stage.”
He further said that McLaren are good at qualifiers but there is still some room for improvement when racing.
Moreover, he said that MP4-27 is a competitive car and they are expecting to win this weekend at Budapest. Besides, he said that winning the grand prix is also dependent on the usage of tyres and understanding the weather conditions.
Furthermore, he said that upgrades will also play an important role in Budapest.
Neale added that drivers of McLaren have a good chance of being competitive at Hungaroring and they are hopeful that one of the two drivers will be able to win the upcoming race.
He added that he does not think that any team would be giving up now. Therefore, Hungarian Grand Prix will be very competitive.
“We believe we've got a competitive car; we've been focusing a lot on our race pace because our qualifying pace has been better than our race pace. We believe that both drivers have got a good chance of being very competitive and hopefully one of them can
win this weekend,” Neale added.
