McLaren uncertain about effectiveness of Red Bull engine map – Formula 1 news
McLaren's managing director Jonathan Neale has said that they are uncertain about the effectiveness of Red Bull Racing engine map and asserted that FIA’s decision regarding that issue was quite unusual.
FIA technical delegate, Jo Bauer believed that the Red Bull cars’ engine was not in accordance with the regulations and took the matter to the stewards before the German GP. Although, the race participation of the defending champions was at stake, however, the stewards allowed them to take part in the race on a condition to give the necessary clarification afterwards.
Later, the team principal of Red Bull, Christian Horner said that they are prepared to give the essential explanation regarding the subject in a meeting which was held on last Monday.
Meanwhile, when Neale was asked to give his views regarding the engine map issue of Red Bull, he said that he is not sure about it and expressed that they are not certain about how effectively it works or what benefits it provides.
Moreover, he said that he is very much surprised on FIA’s response to the matter and asserted that if they had seen any problem with RB8’s engine mapping then why they referred to the race stewards and later asked the Milton Keynes based team to provide the essentials over the matter.
“The honest answer is I really don't know. None of us really know what it is that antagonised the FIA so much to provoke Jo Bauer in to issuing the note that he did on Sunday morning,” he said. “It was quite an unusual step, but I don't think FIA would have referred it to the stewards if they didn't have very serious concerns.”
He added, “I've read press like you have and there are lots of allusions to the fact that there might be some action taken to outlaw it but I haven't seen that, and it's really not for us to know”.
Over and above, he said that he finds it almost impossible to tell how the Renault engine is working in Red Bull’s car and what they are gaining out of it.
