McLaren unsure of introducing its own double DRS later in the season – Formula 1 news
McLaren is unsure about introducing its own developed double drag reduction system although the concept is banned for the next 2013 season.
Lotus are also planning to launch its double DRS system in the current season. Commenting on their developed system, Sam Michael, sporting director of McLarens said that their double DRS is not identical to the DRS of Lotus but it is like that.
Michael told Autosport.com, “It's not like the Lotus one, but we have got a system like that.”
Furthermore, he said that they will work on their schedules and then evaluate whether introducing double DRS is convenient or not. He said that developing the system requires a considerable time and attention and such dedication can result in distracting
them from other motives.
He said, “We will look at all the programmes and see if it is feasible, because it requires work and it detracts from normal upgrades as well. So it is quite difficult to make the system work, as Lotus are discovering.”
He added that if they get a new idea the team starts working on it, if they find it fruitful for the team, they start developing it further.
Furthermore, he said that it is possible that resources get wasted in the double DRS project but if Lotus introduced it earlier then they will be adding more to their pace, although they are very fast.
Michael said, “There is possibly the question of a waster resource on it. As for Lotus, they are d**n quick already, and if they add that then they will be even quicker.”
Mercedes introduced the double DRS in the current 2012 season, but several teams did not copy the design because of its considerable costs and unforeseen advantage to the car.
Team have now agreed that double DRS will not be used in the upcoming 2013 season. Therefore, any development made over this project in the current year will be useless for the next season.
McLaren and Lotus are very close in the constructors’ championship. The difference is of only a single point with McLaren leading Lotus.
