McLaren yet to find out exact reason for Jenson Button’s retirement in Italian GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they not been able to find out the exact reason for their driver, Jenson Button’s retirement in the 2012 Italian Grand Prix.
Button performed quite convincingly in the qualifying of the Italian GP and secured second grid position for the race. Afterwards, although he had a difficult start as he lost his position to Felipe Massa of Ferrari, nevertheless, he regained his place and
came just behind his teammate, Lewis Hamilton.
Unfortunately, he faced a fuel system failure issue due to which he was retired and could not score even a single point in the preceding race.
Whitmarsh said that it is surely an unpleasant occurrence as they lost some crucial point due to the British driver’s retirement. In addition, he said that they are still trying to figure out the true cause of fuel system failure.
“This is very unusual in my experience,” the McLaren team boss told Sky's F1 Show. “What we do know is that there were 50 kilos of fuel in the car, but it wasn't where we wanted it - i.e. being put into the engine.”
Besides, he said that in the span of last few years, they have never been in a situation at which they cannot find out the reason for the technical problems in their car. He also said that they have not changed the basic design of their fuel system in the
preceding five years while he said that it is very difficult to understand.
“I can't recall now in the last few years where we haven't been able to get to the bottom of it (a problem). It's a fuel system that the fundamental design hasn't changed for five years, it's very complex,” he added.
Nevertheless, he insisted that they are not feeling disappointed over Button’s retirement in the previous race and are positively looking forward to attain good result in the 2012 Singapore GP which is going to be held at Marina Bay Street Circuit on September
23.
Let’s see how the Woking based team perform in the night race next week.
