McLaren’s Jenson Button admits they made mistakes in ongoing season – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button admits that his team has suffered a lot during the ongoing season of Formula 1 due to the mistakes they made at Silverstone, Spa and Monza racetracks.
He announced this on Thursday, September 22, 2011.
While speaking to BBC in Singapore, Button said, “We've made too many mistakes this year and haven't got it together on a race weekend, even when we've had the performance.”
During the Grand Prix at Silverstone, his wheel was not tightened properly at a pit stop which resulted in him being retired from the race.
At Spa, there were some communication issues which could have resulted in a major setback for the team. Button however still managed to get a third place for his team in the Belgian Grand Prix.
Later on at the Monza racetrack, Button finished at the 2nd spot despite a slow start to the race.
Button believes that the team could have performed better in this season had he and his teammate Lewis Hamilton not made mistakes in the grands prix that were held earlier this year.
He believes their sloppy performances during this season might cost them the championship title. Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel is currently at the top of the drivers’ championship with 284 points.
With just six races remaining in this season Vettel is thus at a clear advantage over the rest of the drivers according to Button who thinks that most of the teams have nearly given up on their chances of a title win.
He has extended his apologies to the McLaren team for not performing to the level that was expected of him and hopes that next year would be a better season for the team.
The 31-year-old driver said, “That's something we've got to work on. If you look at the last two races, if everything had gone well, we'd have had really good chances. But we haven't done a good enough job. I think we have a car that's good enough to challenge
for wins and if we don't make any mistakes and everything goes right we can really challenge Red Bull and Sebastian.”
Let’s see how the McLaren perform during this weekend’s race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The first free practice session starts Friday, September 23, 2011.
