McLaren’s Jenson Button hails Montreal victory along with KERS and DRS – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Formula 1 driver Jenson Button has hailed his first ever win in the 2011 Formula 1 season which came in the most unexpected fashion.
Button added that the Drag Reduction System and Kinetic Energy Recovery System played a vital role in the Canadian Grand Prix.
He said that he has won some great races in past but this one was special.
“They have all been special, but today was extra special. I have to admit that without KERS and the DRS it would have been very difficult to win. Using KERS and the DRS correctly makes a bit difference,” stated the Brit.
The Canadian Grand Prix started under the safety car due to heavy rain. When the race started on its full potential in the fifth lap, Button along with every other driver on the grid was trying to assess the situation more than trying to overtake.
However, Button’s teammate Lewis Hamilton was driving in his usual aggressive style and tried to make some early overtaking moves in the race. In the seventh lap of the race, Hamilton came outside Button in an effort to overtake him but hit the wall and
ended his race.
In the process, Button’s car was damaged for which he had to pit.
Apart from that incident, Button was also handed a drive through penalty for over speeding when the safety car was deployed. Overall, Button visited the pits six times and was still able to take the lead in the final lap of the race to take the victory.
Button is known for his tyre conservation which he showed in the Montreal race with the new Pirelli tyres.
He said, “I understood the tyres today very well. But also our car understood the tyres well - and my engineers. I think the calls that we made were very good. I was really able to push the dry tyres at the end of the race. I was so on the edge when I was
chasing down Vettel.”
Button is now second on the drivers’ championship table with 101 points.
