McLaren’s Jenson Button happy with 24 points after the Malaysian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 McLaren driver Jenson Button has admitted that he is quite happy with 24 points in the 2011 drivers’ championship which he managed after the Malaysian Grand Prix.
He also mentioned that these encouraging points were a big lead for him behind the race winner, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
The Brit thanked his second place, which he managed in the Sepang race. He said that 24 points are a lot for him after two races of the 2011 season. He further added that there is still a chance to get another 17 or 18 points, in the next weekend of the
Chinese Grand Prix.
Button highly appreciated Red Bull’s performance in Malaysia, and added that Vettel is an authentic winner of the first two events of this season, as he gets his two victories out of two, among the strong rivals of Formula 1.
He went on to add, “Of course, the Red Bulls' pace is very good. I think, in terms of pace we, the Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes team, are the second best, but I think we need to find some improvements.”
After his successful Malaysian race, Button expressed his feelings about the 2011 season and said that he wishes to start his upcoming races for his championship challenge. He admitted that the second place in Malaysia gives him more confidence for the season’s
remaining races.
He said, “The feeling of the car is good and that is important to me. And, hopefully we can take the fight to Red Bull because everyone wants to see that. Our aim is to challenge these guys but it's not that easy, as they are very, very fast.”
He was disappointed due to his teammate Lewis Hamilton’s poor performance. Hamilton was conceded favourite to win the Malaysian Grand Prix, after his outclass performance in Melbourne. He was quite upset about his driving, but after some time he was relaxed
and understood the current condition of his team as well.
On the other hand, McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh announced after the last weekend that the team will introduce some new parts to its machine during the upcoming Friday practice session of the Chinese Grand Prix in order to test them before the course.
He further added after the practice session that the new components will help them to decrease the current gap between Vettel and Button.
The Chinese Grand Prix will take place on April 17, 2011 at the Shanghai International circuit.
