McLaren’s Jenson Button looks to land on podium in his 200th grand prix at Silverstone – Formula 1
McLaren’s Formula 1 driver Jenson Button has stated that he will look to score a podium in the upcoming British Grand Prix of the 2011 season.
The Brit added that a good performance in front of the home crowd is what he wants from the Silverstone race next weekend.
The 2009 Formula 1 champion is second on the drivers’ championship list and is 77 points adrift from the leading driver, Sebastian Vettel. Although the Brit did not say anything about cutting short the lead of Vettel but he did say that the Silverstone race
will be the one for the fans.
“You always want to do well in front of your home crowd. Last year was just a sea of rocket red [McLaren] caps everywhere, and it was quite emotional. It was great to see the support, and you always want to put on a good show for your own fans,” stated Button.
Furthermore, Button has never tasted a podium finish in his entire career in Silverstone. Even in his world championship winning season in 2009, he was unable to land among top three finishers.
Talking about the fact, Button stated, “Hopefully this year I can get a podium finish. We're still going to be trying. We have a fantastic team and if we keep pushing hard, we can slowly, slowly pull Vettel back. The only people to beat him this season are
Lewis and I. We are the challengers.”
Button is still second on the drivers’ championship but his points tally is same as of Red Bull’s Mark Webber.
McLaren will have their chances in Silverstone since Red Bull are expected to suffer a decline in their performance as the Blown Diffuser is being banned from the next race.
Nevertheless, the confidence level of the McLaren camp is once again on a high as still 11 races are to be contested in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
