Jenson Button happy to make Sebastian Vettel wait for his 2011 Formula 1 title – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button says he feels tremendously happy to have delayed Sebastian Vettel’s 2011 Formula 1 title at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Grand Prix that took place on Sunday, September 25, 2011 saw Button put up an amazing race.
Button revealed, “I was ill yesterday morning. I don't know where it came from, but when you do have it you're massively dehydrated. I was a kilo and a half lighter than I normally am in the morning and putting that weight back on was quite difficult.”
Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel, who started the race from pole position, was in a dominating form throughout the race. Vettel won the race, but due to the fact that Button finished in second position, he needs to wait for one more race before he can
secure his 2011 title.
For Vettel to grab his title, the 24-year-old German needed a clear 125-point advantage over his potential rivals. However, after Button’s astonishing finish to Singapore GP, Vettel’s title bid has been delayed until the Japanese Grand Prix.
Right now, mathematically, Button is the only driver who can stop Vettel from winning the 2011 championship. The likelihood of this however seems not so probable. Nonetheless, the 31-year-old Brit is bent on delaying Vettel’s championship title to as further
as he can.
However, Button does understand that he will not be able to keep the reigning champion, Vettel from clinching his title for very long calling it inevitable.
Speaking to Press Association Sport, Button said, “I feel very proud I stopped Seb from winning the championship in Singapore, that he was unable to celebrate it here. So I'm very happy - but we all know it's going to happen at the next race.”
McLaren’s team principal Martin Whitmarsh said that he is quite optimistic about his team’s performance at the upcoming races. Particularly with regards to the Suzuka track, he seems really confident that with the new upgrades and a high-speed track, their
car would fare much better than it did at the recent race at the Marina Bay circuit.
Let’s see what happens at the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix on October 9, 2011 at the Suzuka circuit.
