McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton eagerly awaiting qualifying session of Monaco Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
The 2008 Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has said that the qualifying session of the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix is going to be the most exciting part of this weekend.
“Qualifying is probably the most exciting part of the weekend apart from the start of the race. It is very cool, especially now. Before we would just go to the fastest engine setting. Now, you go for the most powerful downforce setting for the engine, which
is very neat,” said Hamilton.
With the introduction of the new rules and regulations by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for the 2011 Formula 1 season, it was believed at first that qualifying might not affect the results of races much. It was believed that the overtaking
rate of each venue would increase noticeably due to which races would become more challenging unlike the 2010 Formula 1 season.
Hamilton on the other hand claims that the qualifying sessions are still more enjoyable for the drivers as they get to use the blown diffusers to the limit.
“You put lots of front wing in, you suddenly have loads more grip and you can throw the car around like crazy. I can't wait to get into qualifying,” said the 2008 Formula 1 champion.
Other than that, he believes that McLaren have the potential to beat Red Bull Racing team during the qualifying session of the Monaco Grand Prix if the team can improve its qualifying pace.
“If we had qualifying performance I think we could beat them in the race. I think I showed at the last race that I had the fastest race pace throughout the whole race,” he added.
Red Bull Racing team’s pace on the other hand has not been as competitive as its qualifying pace. McLaren finished just 6 tenths of a second behind the RB7 of the race winner Sebastian Vettel at the Spanish Grand Prix. During the qualifying session in Barcelona,
Red Bull were around a second faster than the rest of the teams in terms of lap times which was quite surprising.
