McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton keeps his mum on his collision with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in Singapore GP
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has decided to keep his mum on the collision that took place between him and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The crash that took place between 26-year-old Brit and the Brazilian driver Massa resulted in a drive-through penalty for Hamilton that eventually cost him a possible podium position.
Ferrari’s Massa, however has openly accused Hamilton of jeopardising his race.
Massa said, “Again he cannot use his mind. What he did could have caused a big accident... I was not lucky with my strategy and again something happened with a guy that has done it so many times this year. I will tell him, he doesn’t listen.”
Lap 13 of the Singapore GP saw both Hamilton and Massa in a bit of trouble when the former collided with Massa damaging the rear wing of his car. Both the drivers had to enter the pits which resulted in Hamilton falling from a 6th position
to a 20th in lap 20.
As horrible as it may have looked, anything could have been possible from this point onwards. The way Hamilton’s teammate Jenson Button won the race at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix could have been an example for Hamilton to follow.
The deployment of the safety car at lap 30 came as a blessing for Hamilton when Schumacher caught himself in an accident. The remaining laps saw Hamilton racing his way up and struggling hard to climb up to regain positions.
He was finally able to finish off the race at 5th place while his teammate Jenson Button ended at second.
Hamilton currently sits at 5th position on the drivers’ championship standings and is hoping to gain a few more points before the end of this season.
Commenting on his performance during the race, Hamilton said, “I had fun picking off cars after my penalty, but it was frustrating to once again be down the field when I felt we had a car that could have challenged up at the front. For me, this weekend was
a bit of a missed opportunity. As always, though, I'll put it behind me - I'm already looking forward to Suzuka!”
The Japanese Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on October 9, 2011. Let’s see how Hamilton fares at the Suzuka circuit.
