McLaren’s Martin Whitmarsh: We will keep fighting until end of 2011 season – Formula 1 news
McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that they will keep fighting on until the end of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Whitmarsh added that it is tough to challenge Red Bull in the 2011 championship battle at the moment, as they are very far ahead of them, but mathematically it is possible.
The team principal also stated that he is happy with Jenson Button’s third place finish in the Singapore race weekend.
Whitmarsh commented, “Adrian [Newey], Red Bull and Sebastian are doing a fantastic job, but in a way I am a little bit happy they are not having a party here in Singapore. I am happy for the fans and everything else, and we will keep fighting on. It would
be nice if they could not have that party in Japan.”
The Woking-based outfit principal talked to the media and mentioned that he believes Red Bull Racing will be strong in the last stages of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
McLaren are still busy working on their MP4-26 car and making it perfect for the next rounds of the season.
Whitmarsh went on to mention, “At the moment you have to say Sebastian and Red Bull are doing a fantastic job. They are the ones you have to beat. Jenson is now in second place in the championship and deservedly so, but we can do all the self analysis we
like.”
He further said that they will try to win next races in order to challenge Red Bull for the 2011 title.
Button managed his 2011 Singapore race on the podium recently. After taking second place in Singapore, the Brit is sitting at the second position with 185 points in the drivers’ championship behind Sebastian Vettel.
His teammate Lewis Hamilton struggled for his best possible finish at the Marina Bay street circuit after getting a drive-through penalty due to his contact with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa. Hamilton claimed fifth position for his team in the end.
Let’s see how both of the drivers manage the last five rounds of the ongoing season following their Singapore race results.
