McLaren’s Martin Whitmarsh predicts intense competition since 2011 title is decided – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh believes now that the championship has been decided, it will start to get really competitive because there will be no championship pressure on the drivers.
The youngest double championship winner Sebastian Vettel came in third place in the Japanese Grand Prix, which was more than enough for him to secure his title with four races still to go in the season. This has led to an early decision on the championship
title and now the drivers will not feel the burden of a championship and will perform to their potential.
Whitmarsh believes this will lead to some of the most exciting races.
“Inevitably, there will be a drop of interest - the tension and excitement that we've been fortunate to encounter in recent years is never a given,” Whitmarsh told The Times of India. “I actually think you'll really see the gloves come off and we'll get
to see some truly incredible racing by the greatest drivers in the world.”
Whitmarsh also believes that his drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will not be steered off their winning desire, and will be racing as competitive as ever to prove individual performances and goals. He spoke for his team about their ambitions to perform
at the highest level and did mention how they have not lost any desire to win.
“We've lost none of our ambition to win now that the drivers’ championship has been resolved, and I know both our drivers would dearly love to score a one-two for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes to further proof that we have a superbly competitive car at the moment,”
said Whitmarsh.
Let’s see how the drivers behave on the circuit in the remaining four races for the ongoing 2011 Formula 1 season. It will make for an interesting and exciting viewing to see the drivers perform to their abilities without any pressure.
