McLaren’s worst performance in Turkey, admits Martin Whitmarsh – Formula 1 Update
Recent reports have revealed that, McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, admitted that his team performance in recent Turkish race was ‘worst’ among the other strong teams.
He insisted that the team will come back with a good performance and keep pushing as quickly as they can.
After a strong race weekend in China, the Woking-based outfit expected a much higher performance from their driver, Lewis Hamilton, in Turkey. They were hopeful that he will retain his top position in the remaining races of the season, ahead of Red Bull‘s
Sebastian Vettel.
Hamilton’s car did not give a supportive role over the race, as a result the Briton failed to deliver his excellent run against Vettel.
McLaren admitted that the reason of their bad performance in Istanbul was the rain and reliability issues. Due to these problems, the new updates of their ‘MP4-26’ car did not respond ‘well’, until the chequered flag in the Turkey race weekend.
The team principal blamed tyre-wearing, which became the cause of a tough battle in the Turkish track. He added that the pit stop delays also affected their poor race results.
Whitmarsh further added that the team must focus on their weak points and now they have to do better in the next races, especially in Barcelona.
Hamilton, said, “Conversely, the fact is that Ferrari was up there giving Red Bull a tough time. They are doing a good job, they're very strong and – there's no secret here – we've got to improve our car at a faster rate. Fernando did a
good job – congratulations to him. We'll make sure we try and jump ahead at the next race.”
He also discussed the up-coming race upgrades and went on to say, “It was the worst [race] this season, but I've had worse in my career, and I'm sure we're going to have a lot better as the season goes on. I think we can turn around and we will turn it around
as quickly as we can. We will bring an upgrade to Spain and keep pushing, as simple as that.”
The Spanish Grand Prix will take place on May 22, at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.
