Former Liverpool player Steve McManaman believes that the Reds need to adopt a more realistic approach over the appointment of their new manager, and that the time when the club used to pick their favourite manager is ‘long gone’.
Currently, the Merseyside club is looking for a new manager following Kenny Dalglish’s sacking by the owners last week. Liverpool have shortlisted the names of the possible candidates for the vacant managerial seat at Anfield, and have reportedly approached
the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 manager Pep Guardiola and Brendan Rodgers.
However, both the managers have turned down the offer from the Reds.
McManaman, a veteran of 364 games for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684. He was of the opinion that managers like Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are unlikely to come to
Anfield, and it was about time that the fans started living in the ‘real world’.
He told the reporters, “Those days of that type of appointment have long gone. It's unrealistic, isn't it? Of course, we'd like Pep or we'd like Jose Mourinho - but we're living in the real world.”
Liverpool have won the English league 18 times in total; only second to Manchester United who have won the league title on 19 occasions. In addition, they have also got 5 European Cups and 7 FA Cups accolades to their name.
However, the situation has been a lot gloomier for the Reds over the last couple of years. Their eighth place finish in the recently concluded term meant that they have now failed to qualify for the Champions League competition for the third season on the
bounce.
And the 40-year old, who played for Liverpool from 1990-99, admitted that the situation at Anfield was much different 20 years ago than what it is today.
However, on the subject of the appointment of the new manager, the Englishman felt that a lot will depend on how much the Reds are willing to spend to prize out a candidate already working with another club.
He indicated that he was aware of the fact that Liverpool have approached a number of candidates recently, and felt that the Wigan manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Martinez and Brendan Rodgers are two good options.
He added, “I don't know who's available, who's willing to come. The finance is a big thing, whether you're going to have to extricate someone from a contract.”
“People are picking on Roberto Martinez and [Swansea boss] Brendan Rodgers. They're both wonderful managers and Roberto http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 is a superstar - he's a friend of mine.”
