McNabb extension contains escape clause
The contract which Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb signed earlier in the week reportedly contains an escape clause which would nullify the contract should the Redskins decide to release him at the end of this season.
McNabb's $78 million contract extension came as a bit of a surprise given the fact that he is statistically compiling his worst year since he was a rookie and was even benched during the Redskins 37-25 loss to the Detroit Lions. Only a few hours after signing
the contract, McNabb went on to throw three interceptions as the Redskins suffered their worst loss of the season, falling 59-28 to McNabb's former team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
The quarterback situation in Washington has been a major talking point around the NFL over the last few weeks as nobody has managed to pinpoint exactly what is going through the minds of the coaching staff and the team's management. Head coach Mike Shanahan
has done nothing to clarify the situation by offering conflicting reasons for benching McNabb when the team was down by six points late in the fourth quarter against the Lions.
McNabb spoke recently on his weekly radio show on ESPN 980 and was asked about the possibility of him not being with the Redskins next season. "I will be here next year," he said. "Not just next year, but after that as well."
McNabb also explained that much of the language contained in the contract was included as a necessary provision given the possibility of a lock-out.
McNabb also took a moment to respond to comments made by his former team-mate Terrell Owens who had said on his Twitter account, "How do u justify a 78 million dollar contract w/this type of performance?"
McNabb responded by saying, "It's funny he's worried about what I'm doing, when what are they (the Cincinnati Bengals), 2-6?"
For the record, the Bengals are actually 2-7.
