Mclaren’s Martin Whitmarsh claims that team needs to push hard to catch Red Bull: Formula 1 News
Mclaren’s team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, has claimed that there will be a lot of hard-work required in order to catch the reigning champions Red Bull Racing, which has already won the first two races of the 2011 season.
Whitmarsh stated, “There is no secret - Red Bull Racing have done a good job and we have to make sure we match that or do a better one. There is no Eureka moment. There is not one trick widget/component on their car that we are missing - overall they have
done a good job.”
The Brit further added, “Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault are well-resourced teams that can attack as well. If we stand still we will not only see Red Bull disappear into the distance, but we will get overhauled by these other teams.”
According to Whitmarsh, his team has done a terrific job, giving a tough time to their rivals. He said that the car was unable to impress during the winter testing, but the team has come a long way since then.
However, the British team was not able to outpace the 2010 champions. Red Bull’s driver, Sebastian Vettel, has been dominant in the season until now, winning both races in Australia and Malaysia. He has also qualified on pole position for the Chinese Grand
Prix, which will kick off in a couple of hour’s time on Sunday 17 April.
McLaren was looking good during the qualifying session of the Chinese GP, as both the drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, were quicker than Vettel in Q2. However, the youngest Formula 1 champion in history bounced back strongly in the final leg of
qualifying, claiming his third consecutive pole of the season.
Although Button and Hamilton will start the race from second and third respectively, they will be eyeing to gain some momentum in the beginning of the race. It will become more hard for them to catch Vettel, if he gets off to the good start in the race.
The team principal of McLaren expects his drivers to end on the podium at Shanghai, considering the race pace of the Vodafone sponsored team. He claimed that he was disappointed with the outcome of the opening two races of the season, where one of the drivers
missed out on a top-three finish.
