It is cheaper.  And it's all about gables, foyers, number of garage spaces, big master bedroom suite, and square footage, not quality or aesthetics.

McMansions are built as cheaply as possible.  Extending the brick facade to the sides would cost the developer/builder more.  McMansions are known for their Smoke and Mirror approach, usually with poorly proportioned large facade to imply "wealth" and "presence".  The building will be built like a box with uniform plate heights, cheap windows and materials.
