it would be nice if the boat could be opporated by one person but that is not too important

we are looking around a price range of about $750 to $1250

a cabin is not necessary

he have hardly any sail time so we really need a beginner boat

  1. Try a  RS Vision boat its plastic low maintenance and can easily fit three adults in, it has a jib spinnaker and main so a job for all. you can get second hand boats. pictures of the boat can be seen  on the rs vision news group. This boat is good on the sea and inland and is very stable. I love mine so mine is not up for sail:-) WE have several members who sail it on there own but more fun with two or more .

  2. first i suggest you buy a used one its worth it and if in good condition can be a great buy.

Try a Designers Choice (DC) its not hard to rig and it can hold a couple people.

you could also try a vanguard 15 its a Nice boat and could be sailed with a group or single-handed the rigging is different but once you know what your doing its pretty easy. I'm looking for one myself haha good luck! and i hope you find what you want sailing is amazing!

  3. Lots of other considerations....

Slip, trailer , type, of expected conditions &  how wet you want to get

As an example ....  donated a 22ft Catalina w/ trailer & OB  that brought about $1500 at auction.

Plenty comfortable for 3 &  easily single handed.

Might check the donation sites & see what is available.

    American Cancer Society...hint.

Would be looking in the 19 to 22 ft range .

Most  in that range will have a  cabin big enough to get out of the rain , change ,maybe even pee.

Keep in mind that smaller boats can be a little on the "lively "side when the wind kicks up, but that's how you learn & they're a lot of fun.

Might take some looking , but they are out there.

Would avoid anything that needs more than a little TLC.

Cleanup is one thing ...repairs will cost you.

    Best regards

  4. Check Craigslist in your area. There are bargains to be had there for the careful buyer. Also, consider spending NOTHING on a boat (for now) and go to the local marina and/or yacht club. There is usually somebody looking for or willing to take on crew for day sails, and it costs you nothing. I myself would love to have some crew for this weekend so I don't have to singlehand my boat.
