We cant agree on mostly what a scrub is and I say it has 2 uses for the word and one is using an exaterated whip to get down to the ground faster with more speed but the other is taking speed off of a jump if you know you will over shoot but taping the brakes right at the top to drag the back tire. If you could just put down you definition and if you race motocross so I can say that I asked someone who raced lol

  1. a whip is simply putting the bike sideways in the air, this can be for show or to carry more speed through the air, almost like your cutting the air, a scrub is simply keping the bike as low to the ground as possible to get power to the ground faster which will eventually make track times decrease, hope this helps!!!!!!

  2. Scrub is when you scrub off speed, such as sliding the rear tire to one side or the other, it helps slow the bike down. As for whip, you got me on that one, I never heard of that.

  3. Am with Kato on this.

    Very well answered.

Will just add that many of the younger riders I know tend to whip when racing motocross.  Perhaps they do it as they think they look good, but the whole point of racing is to get from start to finish as quickly as possible.  So scrub jumps keep you closer to the ground and you don't waste all that time in the air.  Heaps of riders think that getting heaps of air makes you a better rider and that is also not the case unless you are doing freestyle.  Being able to scrub properly and take off speed especially if you have a corner right at the bottom of a jump is very important.

And brake tapping that Kato also mentions is a technique that is especially needed if you are doing Supercross on a tight track.

  4. Many people consider a whip and scrub the same thing, which they really are if executed properly. A whip is simply "whipping" the bike sideways while in the air. It is partially for show but also a way to adjust for your landing in the air. In other words, it is faster to hit a jump, especially if it is after a corner, without lining up for your landing on the take off but rather making that correction in the air. A scrub is just a modified whip where you attempt to keep the bike lower to the ground. This technique both "scrubs" off speed and lowers the trajectory of the jump so you can get power to the ground sooner. Hitting the rear brake to drop the front of the bike is a totally different technique called "brake tapping". If you want details on performing a scrub this is a pretty good article.

  5. I agree with Kato, and you usually get Big whips with the X fighters, as well as on the track, you will get road racers scrubbing off speed before cornering by sliding the rear towards the corner, sometimes refered to as backing it into the corner.

Here is an example of scrubbing speed of on the road
