Me and a friend are thinking of swaping my sky box for his sky plus box. Would i have to phone sky.?

Only if you want to be able to watch one channel whilst skyplussing another, and then sky will charge you about £80 to install the extra 'tv line' thing from your sky dish. We swapped ours to a skyplus box that we were given from my bfs dad, we rang sky to activate skyplus - which is now free - but we have to be watching the channel we want to record as we only have one signal coming into the tv instead of two. Does that make sense?

you could use it to pick up ordinary sky, but if you want to use the sky+ facility, you'd have to subscribe.

You do not have to subscribe to sky plus or notify sky of the change over but what you will have to do is get an enginer from an ariel company to install a second ariel from the sky dish to the sky plus box. As you will notice if you compare your sky box to your friends sky plus box he will have two ariels attatched to the back of the sky plus box to give him the recording options.
