Me and my wife are going to Koblenz, Germany in mid August. Any attractions we should definitely see, not mis

We will be there two nights, three days. We do have a car. Is there any villages or towns close by, worth driving to, to see any attractions, etc.

The fortress at the top of the hill is a must see.  You should also go up in the huge Kaiser statue where the rivers meet.  

We also had alot of fun just walking the river walk and buying beer from the kiosks!  Have fun!

If you are in Koblenz on Saturday, 12 Aug 2006...do NOT MISS the "Rhein in Flammen" = Rhine aflame....spectacular Firework display, all the castles are lit up - best way to see is by River Cruise, unfortunately if you don't have a ticket, tickets sold out a year in advance!!! Best place to be is at the German Corner or "Deutsches Eck", where the River Mosel joins the River Rhein.

The Finale will be at the "Festung Ehrenbreitstein" = Fortress across from the German Corner.

For daytime activities, since you have a car:

The Fortress Ehrenbreitstein for a grand view,

The Castle of Stolzenfels = located in Koblenz-Stolzenfels, Rhenserstrasse 33, about 10 miles.

On the Mosel = Burg Eltz = Castle Eltz, to get there from Koblenz

use Hwy  A48 in the direction of Trier and take " Polch"  exit from Hwy  A48 in the direction of Münstermaifeld.  

  In Münstermaifeld continue in the direction of Wierschem, then follow the road signs to Eltz Castle's forest car park.

About 20 miles from Koblenz.

Take a Rhine Cruise to the  wine village of Rudesheim, very touristic, visit the famous Drosselgasse (Thrush Lane)

In Koblenz = The German Corner, The "Schengel" Fountain, the old town...has many old churches, buildings, etc

...... and your 3 days are over !!!!!

Koblenz is a lovely place with much history, so make sure you view all of that first (churches, architecture, etc). South along the Rhine is Boppard, which is one of the main places to stay if you're a tourist. It's just a perfect example of a modern Northern German small town and they have a brilliant Christmas traditional wooden toy shop. If you keep driving along that part of the Rhine they have numerous castles on the hills to spot. Northwards from Koblenz is the tiny village of Bernkastel, with what I call 'gingerbread' houses. Small narrow beautiful original houses, narrow streets and a picturesque fairy tale village. Also Rheim, again a tourist area, but it has a barrel organ/clockwork piano museum with the oldest examples of these instruments in the world. The streets around the museum are paved with street sellers (art/foodstuffs) but there are more of them and a better atmosphere towards Christmas. Have a lovely time though.

Well according to the Koblenz city webpage it is "Germany's Most Beautiful Corner".

The 'Altstadt' (Old City) would be interesting to walk around to see old buildings, churches, museums and architecture.

There is a huge fortress overlooking the city...'Ehrenbreitstein', which was destroyed by Napoleonic troops in 1801...and rebuilt by the Prussians in 1832.

There is also the Deutsches Eck (where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers meet) and 'Schloss Stolzenfels' 5km south of the city centre.

8km south of Koblenz in the 1300 year old town of Braubach, you can see and visit the hilltop castle of 'Marksburg' which you can tour (it has a large Gothic Hall and functioning kitchen as well as a torture chamber).

Further south, you have the small scenic city of Boppard which might be worthwhile seeing...(you can also take a chairlift ride to the 'Vierseenblick' viewpoint from here)

There is also a dramatic steep ride on the 'Hunsrückbahn' train that travels through several tunnels and viaducts on an 8km journey to Buchholz.

There are so many other lovely towns and castles along the Rhine and Moselle Valley worth seeing...Boppard, St Goar, Bacharach etc...the choices are endless.

I recommend you read some travel books on Germany (Lonely Planet or other) as well as visit various websites.

I have given you some as a start.
