Hi, Ive been looking at some kayaks online and have found quite a bit. I decided I want a hardshell, sit in one. The Old Town brand has caught my attention with there Old Town Rush, Otter, and Otter XT. Now I'm 200lbs so I get by on the weight capacity but I am also 6'4 so I think there might be a problem. Would these kayaks fit me? if not what are some other good starter kayaks?

Thanks..

  1. Another site to visit is Smart-Start-Kayaking.com

Check out the page titled How to Buy A Kayak and then the page on Kayak Types - this may be helpful.

    Happy paddling!

  2. Check out paddling.net.  You'll find buyers reviews and links to manufacturers sites that should answer all of your questions.  You'll also find instructional beginners articles to just what you want.  It's the one place I've seen a lot of the user reviews specifically addressing the height and weight questions that you're describing.

It's a great website specifically set up for the kayaking and canoeing communities.  They even have some pretty terrific raffle type contests that you just have to enter your name and email to join.  They also don't spam you after they get that information.

  3. The Old Town kayaks might be a little small for you. My husband-to-be is 6' and he is very cramped in my Old Town. Have you thought about a sit-on-top kayak? They are really nice! I have a S.O.T. and I LOVE it. Try www.oceankayak.com They have a pretty good variety there. I got mine at Gander Mountain, and they probably sell them at Outdoor World if there isn't a Gander Mtn near you. Good luck!
