  1. Abeka by far!!!

    look it up!!

  2. My son (starting 6th in July) loves the following:

TRISMS - history, writing, lit, language arts, geography, and tons more

Math U See - DVD based math curriculum, excellent

VideoText Interactive - he'll be using this for Algebra on up

Apologia - science, they've got pretty much everything

There are tons of different options; the real answer is whatever book helps you learn in a way that makes sense.

A Beka, Bob Jones, Sonlight, and TRISMS are all excellent; Apologia is our fave for science, by far; Math U See and VideoText are our top recommendations for math.  It really all depends on how you learn best.

  3. Try finding Apologia for science by Jay Wiles (i think that's his last name). Apologia is great! You would love it. And Saxon Math for ...welll..math.

These aren't very cheap new, but a lot of times you can find them used. Ask any other homeschooled family if they have anything they would like to sell or go on ebay

  4. The reason it would be very difficult for anyone to tell you what brand of books to use is because everyone is different.

Brand X may be best for one person and Brand Y for another.

We are eclectic in our choices for our son.    He uses many brands.

We use the library and online for most of our reading and used text books for our basics : Math and Language Arts.

  5. I use Abeka, it is a christian curric.

If you are just starting out, most public schools will loan you the books they use, or and older version. I would check with the school district. That way you can pick up were you left off.

  6. If you want a Christian curriculum then I suggest Rod & Staff.  Their textbooks & other materials are VERY affordable & VERY biblically sound.  Rod & Staff Books & Anabaptist Bookstore  can be found here:

    Rod & Staff Books

    http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/

    Anabaptist Bookstore

    http://www.rodstaff.com/

We have been using this curriculum for 18 months & we are happy with it.  We love it!

  7. If your Catholic go to www.setonhome.org/  and click book catalog :)

  8. Sonlight

    Math U See

    Apologia

  9. If you're in sixth grade, then one, you're not supposed to be on Y!Answers and two, why aren't your *parents* the ones finding curriculum for you?

The best "books" (actually, curriculum) are the ones that fit your learning style.  You and your parents need to start there, and then do a curriculum search.

  10. I don't think any one brand is "best"-- it depends on what you like, what you are looking for. Personally, we just go to the library and use the internet.

  11. ok i just remembered one for writing or language arts

    Elements of Writing

    Author: Kinnervy

but im i cant remember which one it was, i remember it was a blue book, i think im using yellow now.

    EDIT

    the blue one is this

Elements of Writing: First Course (Hardcover)

    by James Kinneavy (Author)

  12. Couple of suggestions for you.  To find books that are affordable, check with your local home school support groups.  They can be a wonderful source of where to find things cheap and may even have some books that someone may loan you so you can see if you like them.  PLEASE pick their brains.  Most groups have lots of Moms who love to help new homeschoolers.

I usually purchase used materials from www.half.com.  Beginning in May, usually you can find some used curriculum sales in your area as well.  Some of the easiest curriculum to find used is Saxon Math, Bob Jones, and Abeka.  You may need to look at several before you find one that works for you.

In the meantime, if you can't find something you like... READ!  and then READ some more.  Ask your librarian to suggest some classics for your age.  Good luck!

  13. Check out Alpha and Omega publications. I use Switched On Schoolhouse, which is a computer software program. I've been homeschooled my whole life and this is the best curriculum I've found.

My sister uses the standard textbook version called LifePac.

It's christian material (hence the "Alpha and Omega"ness").

I enjoy Switched on School house, it's interactive and it assigns you homework and grades your work and lets you print out your grades for your records.

You can go as fast or as slow as you want and the material goes up until the end of highschool.

A warning: it is kind of pricey. But it's worth it.

Goodluck with homeschooling! I hope this helps :DDD
