I am coming to live in Melbourne but everyone complains that you could experience 4 seasons in one day, so are people in Melbourne frequently sick and their health care bills higher?

  1. NO! not everyone in melbourne is always sick thats rubbish ive lived in melbourne for 17 yrs now and i am not always sick once a year maybe but thats just the common cold...

melbourne has the best weather especially in summer it is boiling hot during the day so u can have a trip to the beach then at night it cools down heaps so you can get a goods night sleep and a low electricity bill

    i love melbourne

  2. We can get four seasons in one day but its not that extreme that you will end up getting sick.

It's mainly spring that it happens anyway, though this last year the weather patterns have been crazy.

  3. I agree with Ozmaniac and would only add to her rant that the reason more people catch these germs in cold climates is due to the fact that they stay indoors so are in much closer contact with other people.  In hot weather you avoid the contact and therefore less germs.

  4. Melbourne weather is not that bad the issue is that it is hard to predict you see we are on the right hand corner of the map & being in the southern hemisphere the weather comes from the west  So we have this Big hot thing  ( Australia) to the north west & a big cold thing to the south west ( Southern Ocean  being cold from the Antartic).

When our Weather fronts come through it can be a sudden and significant weather change.

Also many who live here are basically soft & dont know what real cold is.

  5. I'm a Melbourne boy and I get sick about once a year. So I don't think we are frequently getting sick.

  6. mate what country are you in?  the whole thing about 4 seasons in 1 day can happen, but rarely does anyone get sick because of the weather; it's all to do with germs and viruses passed between ppl, especially in winter when everyone stays indoors and feeds the virus just like every other devleoped country.

And another thing, our medical system is fantastic ( well not really) at least they bulk bill if you have a medicare card.  Public hospitals don't charge generally.  private hospitals will, so no our health care bills are not higher

  7. I agree with all the answers, especially Ozmaniac and Silkin Storm.  Australians are soft: they think 50 degrees F is really cold!  (Queenslanders think 70F is really cold!!) - that's 10 C and 21 C respectively.

I grew up in Queensland, then moved to Melbourne at about 19, so I have a clear perspective on both:  Melbourne's weather is changeable, but it really is not cold by world standards. [I also spent a couple of winters in Europe.]

In addition, I had bronchitis, asthma, influenza, etc while I lived in Queensland, at least as often as I have them in Melbourne.

Melbourne's a great place to live.

  8. Not that I've ever noticed. People as a whole in Brisbane are sick about the same number of days each year as those in Melbourne. Don't be mislead with the 4 seasons in one day. It's something of an exaggeration (though the weather can be very changeable) and at its coldest, it will never be as cold as it gets in the UK and most of the Europe and the US. If you wear the right clothing and use commonsense, there is no problem at all.

Rant: Why don't more people realise even now in the 21st century, that sickness of the type you refer to, is caused by GERMS (bacteria and viruses), not by cold weather. Very cold weather (not like we have anywhere in Australia) can lower resistance, but it's still germs that cause sickness. Rant over. My apologies for venting - it's a bit of a hobbyhorse of mine.

Good point JJ - Well said.
