Mean Green Volleyball Team has to bad start against Texas Tech
The Texas Tech volleyball team wrapped up play against North Texas on Monday, September 19, after the two teams came head-to-head in the Mean Green Volleyball Centre in Denton, Texas and staged a great volleyball scrimmage. The match spanned over four sets,
where the Red Raiders proved to be better team. They posted 19-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 and claimed victory. The start of the game was good for North Texas as they captured the opening set. However, the Raiders overcame the early deficit and dominated over
their opponent in the following frames.
Amanda Dowdy of Texas Tech exhibited wonderful performance and clipped match-high 18 kills. Mean Green’s Ebony Godfrey was the second best scorer in the match. She put up great effort for her team and added 14 points. Her teammate Courtney Windham supported
the Green squad with 13 points. Nevertheless, it proved to be a fail endeavour as Tech ladies refused to acknowledge Mean Green’s better status.
The home team of North Texas made a strong opening in the match and put away 10 points in a row. The Red Raiders finally broke the ice, while NT jumped to 13-1. The North Texas team hindered the performance of Texas Tech and sealed first set win at 25-19.
Even with the early deficit, the Red Raiders did not take pressure and produced convincing attacks by Amanda Dowdy in the next set. She found a great rhythm and hit the ball from different angles. The situation changed and Red Raiders took over the game.
North Texas caught up in a flurry of reception errors and dropped second set with a difference of 10 points.
Kayla Saey, the setter of NT, guided the North Texas offence in third set and assisted the spikers to hit powerful shots. Red Raiders focused complete attention on the defence side and stopped opponent’s strike with excellent digging. Mean Green once again
failed to make a come-back and lost third set as well.
Texas Tech gained full control of game in fourth set and continued with success. With the better combination of attack and defence, they closed off fourth set at 25-21. Despite a great start in the match, North Texas failed to give what the home supporters
wanted but Raiders obviously walked away with the tag of winners.
The mentor of Texas Tech, Don Flora, shared his thoughts after the match. He stated: "Early on our distribution was very balanced and good, but Amanda was playing at such a high level that I told Karlyn (Meyers) to start going her way more. We faced some
adversity tonight, but I was proud of how this team battled back and took charge. That will be a trait we will need once Big 12 play begins."
The winning Texas Tech squad will return to action at the weekend. They are set to open Big 12 play in Lubbock City. Girls from Lowa State will put up against them in the first match. On the other hand, Mean Green team will open the Sun Belt Conference play
on coming Friday. They will take on East Division’s FIU.
