Meat in mashmellows.?

i heard somewhere on a news report a long time ago, that there was meat in marshmellows. is that true? :S

It's not meat, but gelatin.  Gelatin is made by boiling the bones, hides, and connective tissues of animals.  Gelatin appears in marshmallows, gummy candies, and even some yogurts.

I don't know about marshmellows..

But i have heard that people back east, because of religion aren't allowed to have jello because it's not kosher because it involves animal of products of some sort.  i think an exchange student at my school told me this. beats me.

There is gelatin in marshmallows.  Just like meat, it comes from slaughtered animals and is not something that vegetarians eat.  It's made by boiling bones, hides and conncetive tissues.

I'd love to know where Carmen is finding that "most" commercial marshmallows are made with "vegetable gelatin."  If the ingredients list gelatin it is always an animal product.  There are plant-based thickeners, but they never appear as gelatin.  And there are precious few companies that are making gelatin-free marshmallows, none of them available at regular grocery stores.

I believe you are talking about Gelatin, it's in marshmellows, jello etc.  I also found out that it's the little covering to some of my pills. LIke that gelly-like covering to flaxseed oil capsules...so yeah, not meat, gelatin.

Originally marshmallows were made from the root sap of the marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis) plant.

These days some contain gelatin which is a translucent, colourless, brittle, nearly tasteless solid substance, extracted from the collagen inside animals' connective tissue.  This is not meat but it is an animal product.

There was a time the answer to your question would have been yes. However, most companies that manufacture marshmallows use a vegetable based geletin. I have made marshmallows in the past for gifts, and have made an egg white based and another recipe that called for geletin. I used the vegetable based brand of geletin. I hope this was some help.

actually, its not meat thats in marshmallows, it is gelatin. Gelatin is from ground up cattle bone.so technically, yes ,meat is in marshmallows.

Yup they are right, gelatin is made from boiled skin and cartilage and hoofs.  Basically made from the stuff no one wants to eat.

  Also look out for gummy bears and gummy candy they contain gelatin also.

No, but there is gelatin which is often an animal product (comes from pigs hooves).  Therefore, vegans, vegetarians and Kosher Jews cannot eat things with gelatin like some candies and marshmallows.

no but gelatin is in them and many other sweets. Geklatin is an animal product and therefore, many vegetarians won't eat anything with it in. Rennett is also an animal producty in many foods.
