My car is four yrs. old, and has fifty thousand miles on it, I have just noticed two wks. ago that when I make a sharp left or right turn my steering wheel sounds like it has some pops and creaks in it, not a lot but is getting worse, have plenty of steering fluid in it, thought about tie rods but it sounds like the sound is more in the steering column, it still drives fine, I am a woman and don't have a clue, any ideas, thanks for any help at all.

  1. Take it to a garage and get it checked out properly. Steering failure is very dangerous.

  2. Could be from loose mounts for the steering rack and pinion which transmits noise up the column...could also be a problem inside the column...have a shop check it out. Post again with make and model for better responses.

  3. It could be anything from the internal parts in the column or maybe something to do with the rack and pinion.

Year, make and model would really help and good luck.

  4. if it is front wheel drive it is most likely cv joints ( constant velocity joints )  when worn they will make a clicking sound when turning sharp and will be felt on steering wheel.  must be replaced asap , could be dangerous if one breaks

  5. You did'nt say what kind of car. All makers have little problems here and there. As new as your car is I don't think a major failure is near. Call your dealer and ask someone in the service dept if they have a common noise problem with your model.

  6. inside the steering column are some tiny bearings. usually when the steering wheel starts popping it is because these bearings are failing due to dirt getting into them. You can not grease these and they should be replaced by a certified mechanic. you won't lose your steering but eventually they will break causing your steering wheel to wobble without turning the the wheel. WD40 won't even work as these bearings are way down on the inside of the column and not easily accessable.  other way is to just replace the column. also check the coupler where the steering column meets the power steering rack to insure that this U-Joint there isn't dry. if it is you can grease that one with a little work.
