Question:

Mechanical Disc Breaks - Set up?

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice in setting up my mechanical disc breaks on my mountain bike in a correct and efficient way?

Preferably in a way which will ensure maximum breaking performance.

Any pictures, links etc. would be appreciated.

Thank you.

  1. Which brake are you using?  Post up with the model and we can help you out...otherwise you're just going to get some general advice, which may or may not help you at all.

The one best piece of advice I can give you other than just setting them up the right way in the first place, is to use some compressionless brake housing.  It's the kind that uses linear strands of steel instead of a coiled steel housing (similar to derailleur housing but larger, made for brake cables).  Jagwire, Giant, and Clark's sell a version of this, and most bmx brake housings are this kind (if they're long enough for your needs).  It'll give you a solid feel and more clamping power on mechanicals.  If your braking needs aren't that high, then you can use traditional coiled brake housing and it will give you more of a progressive springy feel when you brake (modulation, of sorts).
