well the question is somewhat a pursuit of a passion and a career...career being mechanical engineering, and sailboats being the passion...are there chances to mix the two and how often do mechanical engineers work with sailboats?

  1. Oh the possibilities!  Consider materials and structural features, if you could use the materials more efficiently, you could cut costs with the same performance.  Perhaps changing the shapes would save weight and maintain performance.  You may be limiting the work prospects though pending the market for new boat design features.  It may be more solid to do some research on the companies currently doing this and how many people they employ.  If it's not that many, then you might want to consider a different job market.  Then mix your sailboat passion and expertise on a volunteer effort designing race designs.  Always good to have many options!

  2. Study fluid mechanics and then learn to design streamlined  sailboat hulls, and sail shapes and areas to be compatible with the hull designs.
