I think it depends on the garage, although, mechanics are pretty good earners anywhere these days.  You are looking at probably 50 to 60k starting (I'm serious).  Very few guys want to be grease monkeys anymore so the job market for mechanics is tight.

In Los Angeles though, among some auto mechanics there is a strong dislike for Mexicans.  If you are Mexican yourself, Mexican American, or have latino friends you may want to prepare mentally for that.  The reason there is resentment is because say you have an electrical problem on, oh, a Honda Accord, 1997.  A "reputable" garage, or Honda's garage will charge $2,000 to fix it, whereas a Mexican garage that is all run down and stuff will fix it for less than half of that and maybe even do a better job.  Because many latino youth is Los Angeles are so irresponsible in school, they are either in gangs, or playing around with cars, or both.  By a time a given mexican american dude is 21, he has been working on cars for 15 years.  No joke man, they say that in Los Angeles, some Mexicans drink motor oil.  Just exagerating how much time they spend around cars.

Its good money, but I would move out of Los Angeles if I was you, places were people do not have the option of a Mexican garage.  Its part of the hipocrisy of Souther California and Texas; people  who are ranting, b*tching and moaning about illegal immigration probably have their cars fixed by a mexican mechanic.  Do not be surprised if our current president's auto mechanic, his personal mechanic wealthy as he is, is Mexican.  He is after all, from Texas.
