  1. Reaction 1 : Benzene + Ethylene + ( Acid Catalyst )---- > Ethylbenzene

    http://books.google.com/books?id=8QzH-BT...

    ( Example of Link for Reaction Mechanism ) You can find such links by using Key Words like " Acid Catalysed Production of Ethylbenzene from Benzene and Ethylene " and search in google.com

    H2C=CH2 + (H+) ---- > (CH3-CH2+)

    (CH3-CH2+) + C6H5-H ---- > C6H5(H)-CH2+-CH3

    C6H5(H)-CH2+-CH3 ----( 1,2 Hydride Shift )-- > C6H5-CH2-CH3

    In practical, Catalyst is Metal halide ( Lewis Acid ; Electron Pair Acceptor ).

    If you never study Organic Chemistry, it will be difficult to understand the mechanism.

    Reaction 2 : Ethylbenzene ----( Dehydrogenation ; Using Catalyst )---- > Styrene

    (

    Mechanism for Dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene is not shown.

    Additional Sources : Most Organic Chemistry Textbooks.

  2. Invention of polystyrene andd styrofoam is at the first link below

    Styrene polymer is produced from styrene monomer see second  link bellow for making the monomer

    The conventional method for producing styrene monomer is the alkylation of benzene with ethylene followed by dehydrogenation to produce styrene monomer.
