My daughter has recieved multiple stress fractures that are not healing, but getting worse since enlisting 6 months ago.Today, she told me she goes to a Dr who will recommend med board, who will recommend a physical eval board.Currently, she says the Drs have no idea why her bones aren't healing.I never had medical issues in my time in service,so I know about nothing of the process. My question is,Before they discharge her,do they not have to have a diagnosis? She wants to stay in the Army and is a wreck about all this, thus turning me into a wreck.Any advice anyone can give me?Is she entitled to copies of her medical records?Just general advice on what she should or should not be doing next. This Dr is supposed to be giving her her permanent profile.Sorry this is jumbled.Poor dad here is about frantic.Advice please

  1. Here is an article on multiple stress fractures. It sounds like they need adequate rest to heal properly and I am not sure staying in the Army will allow her to rest her bones properly so that they can heal...that may be the problem. It sounds like they are often associated with repetitive movements, esp. running or torques from turning at the waist, etc. Sometimes it has to do with low estrogen levels or nutritional status also. So tell her to make sure she gets enough calcium and is not so thin and exercising so much as to be irregular in her periods and low in estrogen. Her doctor can test her estrogen levels. PCOS (polycystic ovarian sydrome) can affect estrogen levels also.

  2. First and foremost,  the military must fix any issues that are health related before the soldier is released from active duty.

Secondly.  Medical Board, she can decline from getting med boarded under special circumstances.  Such as she is able to do her job and meet the armys requirements.

Third,  If she is medically boarded for a disability, that developed or was aggrevated by going to active duty, then she will receive compensation monthly from the VA for that.

I think you would be best needing to talk to a Veterans Affairs Representative about your daughter and find out the issues at hand there.

They must have a diagnosis before they discharge her, and then she can file a VA disability claim and then they will give her more options, such as Vocational Retraining, etc etc etc.

She is and must have her medical records at the time of her release, at least a copy of them.

Now, I would definitely seek staff judge advocate advice for her before she is discharged and let them review the case, and find out what other options may lay for her, and the route that she will want to take would be depicted of those three things.

  3. Stress fractures usually result from problems with bone matrix. (Bone material is not all the same and its strength varies depending a person's lifestyle, genetics, diet, metabolism, endocrine system, etc.)
