EA claim that authenticity is “everything” for them in their sequel to the reboot of their classic first-person shooter series as they continue their Tier 1 approach.
Medal of Honor was the first-person shooter of choice on the PlayStation One and in the early years of PlayStation 2. However, Medal of Honor Airborne saw the series’ final instalment which was set in World War 2.
Fast forward a few years and EA hire Danger Close studios, who with the help of DICE, bring out a decent reboot of the classic series. The major difference being that the tired World War 2 setting was replaced by the mountains and valleys of Afghanistan
and that too set in the present day.
The Medal of Honor series had pulled off a Call of Duty and accept that modern military first-person shooters were what the fans wanted and that is what they delivered.
While the game did not send ripples and shockwaves throughout the industry, it did enough to gain the attention of enough gamers to warrant a sequel. A sequel that Danger Close will be developing using DICE’s impressive FrostBite 2 engine.
In a recent interview with CVG, Richard Farrelly, the Senior Creative Director at EA, had plenty of information which he gladly divulged.
When asked about the importance of authenticity to the series Farrelly replied, “That’s everything for us. I think that’s what separates Medal of Honor apart from the other guys.”
He continued by explaining that the realism added substance and depth to what would otherwise be just another mindless first-person shooter, “We take it very seriously. Without that, an interesting setting and story...we’re floating in a gun world. It’s
really important for us – that’s Medal of Honor’s identity. Respecting the soldiers and telling the story from their point of view.”
However, he also admitted that the development team was focused more on delivering an authentic experience that worked in games, rather than just realism on its own.
