While admitting that “authenticity” was a pillar the next game in the series is built on, Richard Farrelly continued by explaining that they did take creative liberties.
Richard Farrelly, is the senior creative director at EA, and is in-charge of ensuring that the next game in the Medal of Honor series, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, is both a unique and immersive experience for anyone who picks up their controller or gets
on their keyboard to play it.
He claimed that authenticity was the most important factor during the development process and that the developers, Danger Close, were working very closely with Tier 1 Operatives to deliver an authentic experience that gamers would enjoy.
However, many a time, games that go into development with that mindset often end up giving more of a simulator feel than an actual video game. An issue Mr. Farrelly was sure that Medal of Honor Warfighter would not have.
“For us, we’re making a game first, we’re not making a simulator.” Explained the senior creative director, before continuing, “Other games do that and they do it well. Our vibe is to give the player an immersive, authentic felling experience and make it
feel like they’re one of these guys.”
Mr. Farrelly also explained that many of the Tier 1 Operatives they work with “are actually gamers as well so they understand that vibe.” By ‘that vibe’ he meant finding the balance between what realism and what works in a game.
He explained how the meeting with the Operatives on a daily basis helped the studio really reflect what the Special Forces soldiers were all about.
“We look at the elements that make it most authentic.”
He continued, “It’s the way the guys hold their guns, the way they talk to each other, the way they move, enter a room... a lot of small things. It’s the stuff you can only get in a game by having guys like that at your disposal. We have these guys in the
studio almost daily.”
The first Medal of Honor game is a testament to what Mr. Farrelly has highlighted but again one has to wonder if the end product will have found the right balance between authenticity and enjoyability.
