Question:

Medela vs Ameda Breast Pump?

I am trying to choose a breast pump and was wondering about others' experiences with these two. I am looking at the Medela Pump in Style and the Ameda Purely Yours. I would like something that is easy to use and that I can take back and forth to work. Any reviews would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I own the Medela Pump in Style and like it very much.  It's a brand that's known to be reliable and often offered at hospitals or clinics. I've never used the Ameda brand so I can't give an opinion on it.  Consider if Ameda offers BPA free products. Avent is a wonderful bottle and has a nice manual pump (for occusional use) but this brand doesn't offer BRA free. Medela does sell BPA free bottles that easily fit the pump too. The latest Freestyle Medela model that was introduced into the market at the beginning of 2008 is even smaller and HANDS free that the Pump in Style. Wish it was available when I bought my pump in 2007.  You may also want to rent a few different models from a hospital to see what fits your needs.  Also be aware that you may need a smaller or bigger cup depending on your nipple size. Every pump comes with a standard size, but Medela's regular size was too small for me and I had to buy extra cups. I would have not known it if my nurse hadn't mentioned that to me. If you have a FSA account with your work, check to see if the cost of the pump and breast feeding supplies will be covered.  Mine was! Another note: from past experience, DON'T rely on a manual pump if you are going back to work. Spend the extra dollars and get an electric pump!

  2. Both are excellent pumps! Either one would be a great choice. In pumping circles those are the top two recommended.

I used the PIS myself, but that was because my SIL gave me her barely used one.

  3. I have an Ameda Purely Yours.

It's great, i highly recommend it. It's cheaper than medela, a lot easier to clean, has a closed system so no breastmilk gets in it. I love it. I work full time & my son hasn't had formula. It's very easy to use.

For 200dlls i got the pump, bottles, a little cooler to keep the milk cold & a backpack to put it all in.

    God Bless
