Question:

Medi-cal eligibility when middle-aged?

My parents and I are currently under the Medi-Cal coverage but will lose their health insurance once I turn 21 in a few months. They are very low-income and are 50 years old. Is there a way to extend the Medi-cal coverage or any other low-income health care providers that could help out my parents?

  1. Unfortunately, unless they can get documentation from a doctor that they are totally disabled for at least 30 days (and then they would only have Medi-cal for THAT month) they are not eligible no matter how low their income is. The only other option to get reduced rates on healthcare is to go to the county facilities-they base their rates on a sliding scale based on income.

  2. Go to the website below.  There are a number of health insurance companies that offer assistance to low income families under 65.  Good luck!
