  1. First, the link is for a VGA to composite converter, not HDMI.  There is a link in the linked to page for a much more expensive converter to component.

S or composite are standard definition and will be fine for watching DVDs. You won't be able to use the computer as a desktop because of the low resolution. Component is HD and you will get your full desktop on the TV, up to the TV's resolution limit.

VGA would be the best, if your TV had a VGA input, because it is full resolution, and doesn't introduce signal degradation which any converter would.

As far as audio is concerned, you will have to bring the audio over with either a mini stereo to red/white RCA adapter and cables or , if your computer has it, just the red/white  RCA cables.

  2. Well, S-Video only carries video, and the VGA converter will only convert the audio.  So, you'll need audio.  You probably have a Headphone jack, so I would just suggest to hook it up to an RCA cable (1/8 inch to Red/White).  As for quality difference, you might be better off using a converter, but thats just me.
