Medibank International: Dominika Cibulkova sends Caroline Wozniacki packing
Top seed and world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark bundled out of the 2011 Medibank International Sydney on Tuesday. The Dane was upset in her second round match at the hands of Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in two sets. The final match score was
6-3, 6-3.
"At the start of the new season you need to get into match play. I did not feel I was playing great tennis out there. Now I just need to get some training matches, head to Melbourne and get ready for the Australian Open. Last year I had the same start, so
hopefully slow start, good finish,” said Caroline who was playing in her first WTA singles match of the season after she had been given a bye in her first round match.
Caroline, who won a total of six trophies last year before finishing number one in the rankings on the very first occasion in her career, had a slow start to her match against the Slovakian. After trailing behind 2-3, the right-hander was further pushed
backward by Dominika as she took four games in a row to seal win in the end.
With this loss, Wozniacki has become the first top-seed player to suffer an opening round exit at the event since 2003. She converted just a single out of her ten break point chances against the Slovakian at the Sydney Olympic Park. Dominika, on the other
hand, did well to convert four of her six break points to get the better of the tournament’s top seed.
The Slovakian while commenting on her performance in the match after her victory said, “I think I have beaten No.2, No.3, No.4, No.5 and everybody, just not No.1. So I am really happy about it. The most important thing today was I went on the court and saw
myself like a winner from the first point until the last point. So it was not a surprise for me. I just played my game. I had my plan. I knew it was going to work if I just stuck to my plan.”
Meanwhile, the reigning US Open champion Kim Clijsters required just sixty-nine minutes to make her way into the third round of the tournament. She beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, a qualifier from Czech Republic in straight sets.
