I don't know what to become. Either a doctor or a RN. I like both of them but I can't seem to pick. What would you pick and why?

  1. I became a doctor because I had a genuine desire to help people. That's why I've also done a fair bit of missionary work, with Doctors Without Borders and The Tanzania Link.

I wouldn't dare say that becoming a nurse would be any easier, some of these nurses I work with could outsmart me any day.

Nurses tend to have more contact with patients, they do the 'donkey work', but they are rewarded with the fact that they help patients, and get to know the patients better than the doctors.

However, being a doctor is better paid, although they both have pretty poor hours if you have a clockwork sleeping pattern.

It's personal preference, but becoming a doctor requires better grades.

  2. doctor

  3. It's difficult to say and something you need to answer for yourself.  While both professions offer many opportunities to help people, there are some obvious differences.  Schooling for a physician involves four years of college, then medical school, internship, and residency.  Do not discount the debt you may incur over these many years.

An RN, on the other hand, can be earned in as little as 2 years, though you really should pend 4 and get a BSN.  Nurses have many more opportunities than 20 years ago and can still earn over $100k per year if they have experience and a specialty.
