What are the timely filing rules for Medicare, Medicaid, BCBS of NC, United Health Care, Cigna, Aetna?

  1. It varies by individual contract. The general rule of thumb is 90 days, but some have as little as 30 days or as much as three years. Medicaid rules vary by state - in New York, it's 3 years to file. United Healthcare, Cigna, and Aetna are all 90 days from date of service - unless the provider negotiates otherwise. BCBS is 180 days. I don't know Medicare because I don't work with it - my patients are 60 years too young for it.


  2. The best-ASAP but usually you have 1 year from the date of service to submit claims.

  3. It depends... Some states have laws that force the timely requirement to be 1 year. I have worked @ several insurance companies, and 180 days is pretty standard. All companies don't have the same limit for all providers... It depends on the state, the policy type, and @ times, the provider's contract.

    So, anywhere from 90 days-365 days...

    You need to be more specific to get a real answer.
