  1. What are your school grades ?

  2. anesthesiology. Toughest job, requiring a very wide range of medical knowledge and ability to deal with a patient crashing on you suddenly. Not very glamerous, but generally the hours aren't too bad, and while the malpractice insurance is high, so is the salary.

Surgery. the "gloryboys". cutting people open and messing with their insides is just cool.  Depending on how you specialize in this field, you can make from a fair to a great salary. More likely to be oncall, again depending on specialty.

ER doctor. usually an internist or surgeon who specializes in delivering initial hospital care to a patient. Good news, you generally treat and move on with the patients, you get to see a great variety of conditions and injuries, and you are really in a position to save a person's life. Downside, lower end payscale, high stress(you may end up working multiple serious paitents). From what I've seen surgeons tend to make somewhat better ER docs.

Gynocologist or OB doctor. You get down close and personal with female patients. on cool side, OB means you get to deliver babies. again, means lots of late night on calls. Bit messy, but many doctors find this satisfying.

neurology. Another tough one, and with various diseases out there, as well as stroke patients and trauma patients, always a place for you. Fairly high paying.

And yes, a doctor may be on call on one day and work the next. An on call doctor may not have to respond to a call at all, or may find him/herself stuck for hours dealing with something. One reason doctors tend to go in practice together is to make it easier for one doctor to leave for more than a couple of days, and leave the other/others to cover their calls.
