I admit that growing up I was not a troubled child I just caused trouble, drugs not so much violence, I did some things I am not proud of all this occured over 7-8 years ago and some things commited were felonies. I am now clean for 6 years and haven't commited anything let alone a traffic ticket since. I am rambling sorry. Anyways I am working on my Med. Coding and Med. trancriptionist certificate and was wondering if I could still get employed by a company for this with felonies on my record. I have asked this question before and was told that since it isn't a liscenced practition I should have no problem is that true..

  1. I applaud how you've turned your life around :)  I would check with the overseeing organizations of both professions, however, there are not supposed to be too many jobs for the medical coder (or medical biller or medical assistant) despite what those private $$ schools proclaim ;)  I'm not sure about the job market for transcriptionists but please beware of those work-at-home 'jobs' as just about all of them are scams especially if asking for money upfront or may put one at risk for identity theft.

In general, the medical coder may need a few years experience doing coding tasks as well as certification(s) in the field.  For more info:  http://www.ahima.org

General career info on transcription and possible other links:  http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical transcriptionists' or such.

  2. You might have a problem. I think the general rule is 10 years after the "problems". So I would think you have 2-3 more years before someone would hire you.

While you aren't working directly with patient care, medicines, etc., you're still working in that environment, around drugs. I'm think 10 years.
