My eight month old baby has pink eye. We were prescribed antibiotic drops. We were also given CEDAX and told the pink eye might not go away without taking the oral antibiotic. What do you think? Do we really need the oral antibiotic? When I looked up the drug's usage it said to treat bronchitits and ear infections....

  1. Are you sure that the baby does not have an ear or sinus infection as well?  Babies sometimes get pink eye from wiping their noses and rubbing their eyes and spreading infection into them.  If there is no fever or any other sign of another infection, use just the drops everyday up until two days past when symptoms disappear.

  2. Pink eye is frequently viral and no amount of antibiotics will help.  Breastmilk on the other hand kills most viruses, so if you have some use it.  If you are having trouble getting the eye drops into the baby's eye go to a compounding pharmacy and ask them to make it into an ointment (they will need to call your doc for a new script).  Or you can purchase polysporin eye ointment.

Given the serious short term and potential long term effects (asthma, etc) of oral antibiotics I would not give them for no good reason.

  3. I don't think you'll find many legitimate M.D.s hanging out on Y!A.  Why not just take the advice your own doctor gave you?

  4. idk

  5. so you wont take the advice of your doc who prescribed you the meds, but yet you'll take advice from total strangers on yahoo answers, im baffled.

  6. Doesn't the CEDAX also say it can be used for bronchitis, ear infections, and other uses?  If the baby has conjunctivitis (pink eye) then by all means give the the CEDAX.  It can be either viral or bacterial and neither need to be treated by a mother with no medical training.  Do what the doctor said, he isn't going to kill your baby.

To set your mind at ease, talk to your pharmacist.
