In regards to medical insurance, what classifies as a domestic partner? Say I have been dating this girl (I am a guy) for 3 years and we have a child together. We never lived in the same household. Now she quit her job and is moving in with me. Can I get her under my medical as a domestic partner? I live in New Jersey.

  1. It will depend on the insurance policy. For example, at my work (Florida) my insurance covers same-s*x domestic partners, but not opposite-s*x domestic partners. However, where my friend works, it will only cover spouses (marriages recognized by Florida statute) or children. You will need to contact your employer and ask them how the policy is written.

  2. To register for a New Jersey domestic partnership, a couple must share a common residence, be engaged in a "committed relationship of mutual caring," and agree to support one another if the need arises. They must also demonstrate existing financial interdependence like a joint mortgage, bank account, or designation of one in the others will.

If you are a state employee she can get on your coverage if you aren't you will have to check with the insurance carrier.

Here in VA there are only a few carriers that have domestic partner coverage.

  3. Yes you can. Go to your Human Resource office or call them they will send you the paper work

  4. Does New Jersey have a domestic partner law?  Most states don't, and employers don't have to follow it, unless the partner has to be REGISTERED (might as well just marry her).

Generally, you don't get the priveleges of being a spouse, without being married.
