Medical payment or PIP coverages?

Hi,

What is the Texas's auto insurance laws for Medical payment and PIP coverages? Which coverages of those two should i have with the condition i live in Texas and have no health insurance? If i have both coverages, will it be worth and useful when i get an accident? I heard that only either one of those coverages will work when we have an accident. So that's why it isn't a suggestion to purchase both options. Is that true? Thanks.

  1. If 'you've heard' that from your agent, you need a new agent.  You should be discussing this with your agent.

    PIP includes:

Medical Expenses – These may include medical and surgical treatment; dental and optometric treatment; ambulance and nursing services; necessary medications, medical supplies, and prosthetic devices.

Lost Wages – If you or your passengers are unable to work due to accident-related injuries, PIP helps you recover your lost wages.

Substitute Services – Should you or your regular passengers need help performing household or other tasks due to accident-related injuries, PIP also helps pay for such substitute services.

Funeral Expenses – If a covered individual dies from accident-related injuries, PIP helps pay for related funeral expense.

Medical Payments:  is an optional coverage in Texas that pays for medical and dental treatment, hospitalization, professional nursing services, prostheses, and funeral expenses if a covered driver and/or accompanying passengers are injured while in an insured vehicle, regardless of who is at fault in the accident.

So, if you buy both, instead of $5,000 of medical coverage, you now have $10,000 of medical coverage.  So if you have major injuries, instead of being $95,000 out of pocket, you're now $90,000 out of pocket.

In my experience, once you go over $5,000 in REAL hospital costs (not chiro stuff!), then usually you go well over $50,000.
