Question:

Medical professionals- Very tender skin on inside thigh- need to worry?

Hello

I am 27, and occasionally get really sensitive skin on my inside thigh (just below groin area). The whole area feels like it's burning. It has never bothered me, by I read somewhere it could be a sign of DVT. I'm taking the contraceptive pill(Microgynon 30) and yesterday took Ibuprofen as the arthritis in my hand was playing up. I am flying early tomorrow morning and am just wondering if I need to be worried?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Hey, i'm a physiotherapist, i've came across many DVTs when workin in hospital, and i've never heard of it affecting the thigh. It mainly is found in the calf area. You should lie on your stomach and get someone to compare yor calves (at the back of your lower leg). Does one feel warmer than the other, is one more tender than the other, is one more swollen than the other? They're the main things to ask.

I'm afraid i dont know much about the contraceptive, or how it could affect you, but i know my mother takes medication which tends to cause blood to clot. She went to the doc for a check-up before flying and she said she'd be fine. I'd advise you to go to you local chemist and by flight socks.. they are great at preventing DVTs when flying. Also, as someone mentioned, it you could get some blood thinning medication before you fly, it would be helpful. Also, when in flight, move arond alot, do simple ankle and knee movements and you'll be fine :)

As for what the actual cause of the sensitive skin is on the thigh... i'm not sure. Though i do know that those who are overweight tend to have sensitive skin here due to the thighs rubbing together. Also, my skin is quite tender and sensitive there.. i'm not overweight but have a few stretch marks there, and find it generally tends to be a sensitive area. Hope this helps :)

  2. A DVT usually does not happen on your thigh it usually affects your lower leg more than thigh. If you have any swelling or warmth in the area you may need to get it checked out. I do not know what the burning could be from. Do your thighs rub together. If they do they make a special no chafing powder for that area.

  3. I've never known a DVT to manifest first of all in the upper thigh. It's almost always spotted first in the calf, with the upper thigh swelling if the problem is not treated.

If it is an occasional thing that has been happening for a while (sorry, you don't say how long) then I really would not be worried.

How long are you flying for? It would be common sense to take a junior aspirin (75mg tablet) before you fly anyway.

    Have a good holiday.

  4. believe me, you'll pretty well know if you have a dvt!

i woke up and one leg was almost twice the size of the other, with a dvt in the same spot you describe.

if you are spooked, measure around both your things and then around both calves or ankles, write it down. this is exactly what the docs would do. the other thing that you can do is to take one aspirin every day- thins your blood somewhat- but seriously if there's no or nearly no difference in the circumference of your legs don't worry about it

you should be fine to fly- just take a tape measure with you :)

try lotion- sometimes real dry skin burns like that too
