Question:

Medical records and adoption?

My partner and me have been seriously considering adopting so I went along to my doctors to view my medical records. There are strange things in there like ''psyche problems?'' and ''outbursts'' I get the impression someone down the line thought I was nuts. I already wrote a letter to include in there, but I was told it couldn’t be removed. How much of a problem is this? Do the social workers ask for copies of your medical record or do they just ask for an examination/assessment of your physical/mental health?

  1. chances are that they will want to see your medical history (they do here in the UK). They have to look at everything as its important. I cant see how mental health problems, unless really bad, can effect the process. Infact I would say that 9/10 people have suffered from depression at one time in their lives, so it will be on your records, unless you havent been to the doctors. I wouldnt worry and just take it all as it comes.

    Good luck on your adoption

  2. You are asked to get a physical exam from your primary Doctor and there will be questions regarding your mental health. During your home study for the adoption there will be several questions on it regarding past issues that may have happened in your life. Just be honest  when answering the questions. Most people go through difficult times at some point in their life.

  3. Hi, my husband is adopting my son and bizarely I have to adopt him aswell, strange I know but its the law!!!  We must go through the same process as if we were adopting a stranger even tho its only step parent adoption

Our social worker asked for our doctors details and when I asked why she said it was part of procedures etc.. I said I wasn't happy with anyone looking at my records and that I wouldn't consent to it but she said they only write to the doctor and ask if we are in good health etc... they dont actually look at our records
