What exactly does the phrase "linear areas of atelectasis" mean pertaining to an exray of the lung?

Linear in lower and atelectasis is an area not receiving oxygen. So it is either a diseased lung that is not getting the O2 or a collapsed lung not receiving O2. Usually found in smokers or trauma patients.

atelectasis means collapse of the lung. Linear areas means that the collapse lung make  form of lines in the picture of the chest X-ray.
